11.5.19 Let There Be White

Wallboard, that is. After a summer of installing plumbing and electric and insulation, we got our permits to continue. Which allowed us to move forward with sheet rock, or gypsum, or wallboard…whatever you call it, it turns a construction zone back into a home. Hunt House gets real.

  2. So you are leaving all of the ceiling beams exposed? Was that the way it was when you bought it?

    1. Almost every room had wallboard on the ceilings. And we are leaving that on the front, more formal rooms of the house, e.g. Living Room, Dining Room, Master Bedrooms, etc. Also all the basic functional rooms like bathrooms and hallways will have wallboard ceilings. But in the back, informal part of the house, we are going to leave the beams exposed. They are not historic back there, they are modern milled, so not particularly handsome, so we are going to paint them white. Kind of a rough farmhouse feel for the Kitchen downstairs and the Kids’ rooms above that. So the house will end up with a Formal Federal front, and Jersey Farmhouse back. And there’s also a very bright glassed 1987 groovy addition, so it will have three distinct divisions.

    2. Oh, and one other thing. In at least THREE places up in those rafters is evidence of previous fires. You can tell because some beams have been trimmed of damage, or selectively painted over. The house has three chimneys, all of which had upstairs coal stove lines tying into them. So there were some serious amounts of fires in there over the years.
